In Commerce stream, there are more than 25 Lakhs students passing out from B.Com and BBA every year. So number of people trying for jobs is more compared to the available jobs for degree students and salary is also less. For professional courses like CA or CS or CMA, the demand of qualified professionals is very high and currently, the supply is less, which means that the number of available jobs is high in the market. So just completing a degree and finding a job is tough whereas if you complete CA, CS and CMA courses, you move away from being chosen for a job to choosing a job.

Broadly, there are the 4 main options that the Commerce students can pursue in this field after passing 12th className:

  • Option 1: Pursue B.Com or BBA and then join the BFSI (Banking Financial Services and Insurance) sector for a job. But there are close to 25 lakhs students graduating from B.Com and BBA every year. Due to this, there is intense competition for the available jobs and hence the starting monthly salary of fresh graduates from this option is relatively in the lower range and averages between INR 13000 – INR 18000 per month.
  • Option 2: Write Bank Entrance exams or Government Job related competitive exams. This is an option which is chosen by a large number of Commerce graduates. There are close to 15-20 different types of competitive exams of this nature available for students to attempt. Students who clear these exams and secure jobs have the benefits of job security and higher monthly salary averaging around INR 20000 – INR 25000. However, there is immense competition in this field with close to 50 lakh students writing these exams, which makes these exams difficult to get through.
  • Option 3: Pursue post-graduation courses like MBA or M.Com after completing a bachelor’s degree. These days, a lot of students from commerce are opting for MBA because of higher salary and job opportunities. However, to realize the dream of higher salaries and assured jobs in MBA, students need to get into premier or top tier colleges. Job prospects after doing MBA from these top tier colleges are relatively good with a salary range between INR 25000 to INR 1 lakh per month. However, competition for seats in good MBA colleges is pretty high with almost 15 lakh students competing for these seats across the country.
  • Option 4: Pursue professional courses like CA, CS, and CMA. This option can be pursued along with degree without compromising the studies in degree course. One of the interesting aspects of CA, CS, and CMA is that because a student can attempt these exams any number of times, the chances of a student clearing the exam is very high compared to all the other options. Additionally, the results of the students in these courses is based on their individual performance and not based on the number of seats available or ranks in the competition. In other words, the students can clear the exams if they get marks above a certain cut off percentage. This means that the student is relying on his/ her own performance to clear the exam and does not need to worry about competition. So, these courses can be pursued by students at any point of time in their life, are entirely merit-driven and based on student’s individual performance and require a low level of investment. Also, there is strong demand for CA, CS and CMA professionals in India and abroad which results in very lucrative salary packages even for fresh CA, CS, and CMA professionals.

  • 11th and 12th className syllabus have a lot of similarities with CA Foundation. CA Foundation course syllabus for subjects like Accountancy, Economics, Business Studies, Business mathematics and Business Statistics is same as syllabus of above subjects in 11th and 12th className. Only subject of Foundation course of CA which is not taught at 11th and 12th syllabus is Business Law.
  • In case of CSEET, most of the sections of the exams like Business Communication, Current Affairs and Logical Reasoning are generic in nature and these subjects help students in competitive exams later on. Economics and Business environment section of CSEET is similar to Economics subject in 12th className.
  • In case of Degree students, 80% of CA syllabus, CS syllabus and CMA syllabus is same as what students will study in their Degree level in Commerce or B.com or BBA.
  • The difference is that these professional courses deal with concepts of Accounting, Economics, Maths, Stats, Law, Business Studies, Tax, Financial Management, Cost Accounting, Indirect Taxes, Information Technology, Auditing etc at a deeper level than what we learn in our normal studies.
  • So pursuing these courses help students in automatically preparing for their 11th, 12th or degree level exams.
  • All these courses have 3 levels
  • These courses can be pursued along with your degree and hence they save a lot of time if they are pursued along with Degree. This means that you can start pursuing your courses while pursuing your degree course.
  • Typically, when you are pursuing CA, CS or CMA, the 1st goal which a student should aim at passing at least Level 2 of CA, CMA or CS (which is CA Intermediate, CMA Intermediate or CS Executive respectively). Because the moment a student clears Level 2, he or she will start getting job opportunities in the market.
  • After completing Level 2, typically it takes 2-3 years for completing CA Final and around 1-1.5 years for CS Professional or CMA Final.
Considering the CA/ CS/ CMA are professional courses and one of the best courses in Commerce, you can opt for any combination in Commerce in 11th and 12th className as long as you are comfortable with the subjects. So, students can choose any combination of Accounts, Economics, Business Studies, Business Statistics and Business Mathematics. Please note that irrespective of background of student, Proedge will spend lot of time in teaching basics so that student’s mind is tuned to level of difficulty of CA, CS or CMA level 1 exams.

  • When we prepare students, we give a proper study plan. The only thing required is to study regularly with a disciplined approach. If students study for 2 to 4 hours per day along with our coaching, they can easily crack these exams.
  • The advantage of CA, CS and CMA courses is that you need not complete all 3 levels to get a good job.
